Upcoming E-mini Holiday Closures
The end of 2017 is almost here, and with it, we have E-mini holiday trading hours when the markets will be closed. What holidays will impact your trading? Veteran’s Day is right around the corner on Nov. 10, but the markets will remain open. Thanksgiving Day is Nov. 23. The markets will close early at 1 p.m. ET and reopen at 6 p.m. ET. The following day, the markets will again close early, this time at 1:15 p.m. ET. The next holiday is Christmas Day. The markets are closed Christmas Day, but reopen at 6 p.m. ET. What about the New Year? New Year’s Day is a Monday, so the markets will be closed. They reopen New Year’s Day at 6 p.m. ET. Check this 2017 trading calendar for a consolidated representation.
E-mini Holiday Calendar
These holiday hours apply to CME markets (also called “products”) like the E-mini S&P. The official CME page has the latest announcements. Specifically, these holiday hours apply to CME equity, interest rate, FX, energy, metals, and DME markets.
Generally, it’s best to avoid trading around big holidays. The markets are usually slower, which can lead to choppy conditions. It’s difficult to make a profit when the market can’t decide where it wants to go next.
Remember that clocks in the U.S. move back an hour on Nov. 5. We switch from EDT to EST, which means the US/Eastern time zone offset changes from GMT-4 to GMT-5. GMT is pretty much the same thing as UTC, in case you’re used to that format.
